In a landmark exhibition, London’s Courtauld Gallery at Somerset House is set to unveil two of Vincent van Gogh’s poignant masterpieces, “The Courtyard of the Hospital at Arles” and “The Ward in the Hospital at Arles”, together for the first time in the city. This significant event is part of the exhibition titled “Goya to Impressionism: Masterpieces from the Oskar Reinhart Collection,” running from February 14 to May 26, 2025.
These paintings, created in 1889 during Van Gogh’s stay at the hospital in Arles, France, offer a profound insight into the artist’s life following his self-mutilation incident. “The Courtyard of the Hospital at Arles” provides an external view of the hospital’s serene courtyard, while “The Ward in the Hospital at Arles” offers an intimate glimpse into the interior, depicting patients in their beds. Both works reflect Van Gogh’s unique perspective during a tumultuous period in his life.
The journey of these artworks to London is noteworthy. Acquired in the 1920s by Swiss collector Oskar Reinhart, they have been housed in Winterthur, Switzerland, and have rarely been loaned out. Their appearance in this exhibition marks a rare opportunity for art enthusiasts to witness these masterpieces firsthand.
The Courtauld Gallery, renowned for its impressive collection of Impressionist and Post-Impressionist art, provides a fitting venue for this exhibition. Visitors can also view Van Gogh’s “Self-Portrait with Bandaged Ear”, another significant work from his time in Arles, which is part of the gallery’s permanent collection.
This exhibition not only offers a rare glimpse into Van Gogh’s personal experiences but also showcases the broader context of art history, featuring works by Goya, Monet, Renoir, and Cézanne. It’s a must-see for art lovers and those interested in the profound narratives behind these timeless pieces.
